Plantation Shutters

Information current as of:

So what are plantation shutters? They are indoor shutters, usually wooden, with a push rod in the middle that allows you to push the blinds up or down depending on your needs and the direction of sunlight. We had a sunroom in the house I grew up in that had plantation shutters all around. Although back then I had no idea that's what they were officially named.

You can buy plantation shutters and most home decorating and improvement stores.

These shutters are highly versatile, working with a mutlitude of decorating styles. They look good, block light very effectively, have a high resale value and add good value to your home, and even offer some insulating factors. They work in pretty much any room and don't require the addition of fabrics to spruce them up. They have decorative and functional value all on their own. Additionally, they offer aesthetic benefit (curb appeal) from outside your home.

This external curb appeal should be considered when shopping for your plantation shutters as you don't want to get a color or type that clashes with your exterior house color. Most of these shutters that I've seen are in wood, which goes with everything, but if you find a unique color or style be sure to consider interior and exterior color matches before purchasing.

You can get these in genuine wood, faux wood or vinyl finishes.
